SAN ANTONIO, October 20, 2024 – A new groundbreaking study published in JAMA Neurology found that untreated hearing loss can increase one’s likelihood of developing Parkinson Disease (PD). Hearing aids can “attenuate this risk, and therefore widespread screening for hearing loss and appropriate use of hearing aids may reduce the incidence of PD.” The study examined over 3.5 million veterans, making it the largest study of its kind examining the link between hearing loss and Parkinson Disease.
San-Antonio-based Physicians Hearing Network (PHN) is the leading provider of hearing screening, testing and treatment exclusively through independent primary care physicians with locations across the U.S. PHN tests patients at their Primary Care Physician’s (PCP’s) office where they’re most comfortable, resulting in more patients getting screened and treated for hearing loss during routine office visits.
“This study shows how important it is to get screened during routine visits to the doctor. That’s why we work with a great team here in San Antonio to provide hearing screening services at PCP offices across the U.S. If you’re at risk of hearing loss, getting screened and treated early is vital for your overall health.” said Daniel Shafer, PHN’s Chief Operations Officer and a Licensed Hearing Provider.
Hearing loss can lead to serious health problems, including diabetes, heart disease and now, Parkinson Disease. PHN’s mission is to simplify screening so patients can get the help they need when they need it most.
Common signs of hearing loss include trouble understanding others; difficulty concentrating in noisy environments; trouble hearing soft or high-pitched tones; speaking too loudly and the sound of ringing in the ears.
